getting on with the winter blues

those winter blues baby (literally)

I don’t know if it’s just me, but winter feels like it’s been arriving later every year (thank you, global warming). That said, it is getting chilly in Madrid. Coming from my friends in the States, I know those temperatures are even lower. When I say low, I mean my friend in Idaho told me it was -20 degrees there today. So, yeah, I’d say it’s been frosty just about everywhere.

Although it’s not that cold here, I’ve still been getting those winter blues lately. Maybe it’s the post-holiday wind-down, the stress of the new year, everything happening in the world, or maybe a mix of it all! Whatever the reason, the blues have most definitely been blues-ing, and I’ve been on a mission to find some ways to get through these winter days. Even if you’re not feeling down, these ideas can brighten up any day! So without further ado, let’s tackle the winter blues:

1. Clean Your Space

Okay, I know what you’re thinking—when you’re feeling down, cleaning is probably the last thing you want to do. But hear me out: studies show that 80% of people feel more relaxed after they’ve tidied their home. A messy environment can make you feel overwhelmed and cluttered—and that’s the last thing you need when you’re already feeling low.

If cleaning feels like a lot, start small. Sometimes I’ll organize my cabinets (the Tupperware section, for example… iykyk), and it helps me feel calmer and more put-together. Even just tidying one small area can give you a sense of accomplishment and ease.

2. Create a Vibe in Your Room

This isn’t just about cleaning—it’s about making your space cozy and inviting. Think about what makes a room a vibe. Light those candles you’ve been saving for a “special occasion” (hint: today is special enough). Grab your coziest blanket, dim the lights, and add some warmth to your space. It’s all about creating an environment that feels comforting and relaxing.

3. Buy Yourself Flowers

Why wait for someone else to bring you flowers when you can treat yourself? Head to your local market and pick out a couple of small bouquets. Better yet, combine them to create your own unique arrangement! Not only will flowers brighten up your space, but arranging them can be a fun and therapeutic activity. It’s a little way to add beauty to your day and your surroundings.

4. Play Some Tunes

Music has a magical way of lifting your spirits. Whether it’s lofi beats, cozy jazz, or your favorite feel-good playlist, let it play on a speaker for that extra vibe. Bonus points if you have a record player! Sometimes, I’ll avoid using mine because flipping the record can feel like a hassle, but honestly, it adds so much joy to the experience. Trust me—it’s worth it.

5. Visit a New Café

These days, it feels like there’s always a new café opening up. I’m almost certain there’s one near you that you haven’t been to yet. Take yourself on a solo coffee date! Bring a book or a journal and channel that main-character energy. There’s something so cozy and peaceful about enjoying a coffee in a new space, especially with a good read or some time to reflect. And don’t forget to treat yourself to that pastry you’ve been eyeing—you deserve it.

No matter which of these activities you try (or if you try them all!), I hope they bring some light into your day. The winter blues can be tough, but remember that brighter days are ahead. Clouds always move on, and so will this season. Wishing you a wonderful rest of your winter and plenty of joy with these to-dos!

Until next time, my loves,

xoxo,
Avalon
