how to thrift for home decor
Now THIS is a topic I could go on and on about—truly. I’ve been thrift shopping for as long as I can remember. Literally, the first time I recall was when I was about six years old, browsing through records. I stumbled upon the Peanuts "Charlie Brown Christmas" record. Growing up watching Charlie Brown, finding that was so lovely to me. However, being six, I didn’t have a record player of my own at the time, so I left it behind. To this day, I wish I hadn’t (insert crying emoji).
With that being said, I believe I’ve developed a pretty sharp eye when it comes to thrifting. I may not always strike gold, but I usually find some pretty great things on each trip.
However, today, we’re not diving into the art of thrifting for clothes—we’re diving into the art of thrifting for your house. At the end of the day, I truly love the look of vintage art, a beautiful vintage vase, or, simply put, the overall “vintage” vibe in home decor. Since this is my go-to style, I’d say I get pretty lucky when I thrift for home decor. But no matter your style, there’s truly something for everyone at the thrift store. And as a bonus, they really just don’t make things like they used to!
Whether you’re searching for something unique and vintage or just looking to save a few dollars, thrifting is definitely your best bet! Here are some of my favorite things to look out for when thrifting for your home:
1. Kitchenware
This is by far my favorite thing to thrift for home decor—I think I might actually be addicted. There are countless things that you could get second-hand when it comes to kitchenware. The options are honestly endless. From cups, to silverware, to even needing a used blender.
First things first, do NOT go to the store to buy a mug or a new glass baking dish. The thrift store has you covered with so many options (and trust me, they’re usually way cuter).
Another thing I love to shop for is stained glassware. There’s something so beautiful about the unique pieces I’ve collected over the years. They are the perfect dishes for elevating a happy hour and dinner party with friends.
I also adore vintage porcelain or ceramic baking dishes. Now this is an example pf the pieces they just don’t make the same anymore. With their engraved or printed designs, they’re truly one-of-a-kind treasures, far more charming than any glass or metal baking dish you’d find at the store.
2. Blankets and Throws
Blankets and throws from the thrift store are so often overlooked. Yes, I know the first thought might be that they’re “icky” or “gross” because they’re used—but if you thrift for clothes, isn’t it the same thing? A simple wash (or two if you’re worried) makes them as good as new!
Thrifted throws are often beautiful, unique, and incredibly cozy. Next time you’re at the thrift store, take a minute to browse the blanket section. You might just find a gem!
3. Lamps
Let’s face it, lamps these days are SO boring—and if they’re not, they come at a hefty price. Why not look for a lamp at the thrift store?
There are gorgeous lamps waiting to be discovered, from stained glass to funky shapes and sizes. Plus, never underestimate the power of a lamp. It can truly light up a space (pun intended) by adding an unexpected element of beauty.
4. Artwork
I have vintage oil paintings scattered all over my house—from big to small, I love them all. Vintage art has so much character, and I love being able to give these pieces a second life.
Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you can even find rare pieces that might be worth something. Either way, adding vintage art to your home is an easy way to elevate your space with charm and history.
5. Candle Holders
A vintage candlestick holder just does something to me—I can’t explain it. I feel like I live on the prairie, lighting my room with glowing candle shadows. On my recent trip to Switzerland, I found a beautiful ceramic and handmade flower candle holder, and I absolutely adore it. It’s such a unique piece and brings so much charm to my space.
There are so many different styles of candle holders at thrift stores, and you can find truly beautiful pieces. Whether you use them as everyday decor or to spice up your dinner table, they’re always a win.
6. Bedding
Similar to blankets, bedding can be a great find if you’re willing to give it a thorough clean. While it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, you can discover gems like bed skirts or vintage pillow covers.
Bed skirts, in particular, can get quite pricey, so finding one at the thrift store is a steal. And with items like pillow covers, they’re super easy to wash and reuse!
The next time you think about shopping at Target or Amazon for home decor, try to think twice. There’s already so much waste in the world with product overload and overconsumption. More often than not, you’ll find something better and way more unique at the thrift store—for a fraction of the price.
I hope you find amazing treasures next time (and every time) you go. Wishing you all the luck and happy thrifting, my lovely little darlings!
xoxo,
Avalon
